The lost city Kamień Pomorski

Share

The first reference to Kamień Pomorski situated in Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeship by Kamieński Bay comes from 1124. In the XI century there already existed here a big medieval city which was the residence of the West Pomeranian princes. In the XIV century Kamień joined the Hanseatic League. Today, the importance of this city is significantly lower. Now it is a sleepy city. If we visit it by chance, we will only come back once.

I have a few favourite places in Kamień Pomorski. It is worth going to the most prestigious building first – John the Baptist's Cathedral. Inside you notice a XVII century baroque organ and an ambo. A big iron door on the left side of the church leads to the garth, which was started in the late XIII century and finished in the XIV century. It is the only one of its kind in Poland. In the past it was a burial place of capitulars and bishops, a place of meditation and a garden. Today time runs more slowly in this place. You don't hear the noise of the street. The interior wrapped with cloisters and overgrown with lush plants gives refreshment on hot days. It is a really unique and quiet place.

In 2012 a modern beautifully placed marina for yachts was opened in the city. This neighbourhood of water regions in Kamień Pomorski is a real Eden for lovers of sailing, rowing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and fishing. I don't need to recommend the marina to owners of yachts. I recommend this place to others for walking on sunny late summer afternoons. Weary walkers should visit Pistacchio – a café with a tasty iced dessert.

First and foremost I go to Kamień Pomorski with one goal – to eat and buy tasty fresh fish. I would probably never have gone to the fish and chip shop Zubowicz KAM 13 if I had not been encouraged by a few people. Even if I had come across it by chance, I would probably have passed it by. The Fish and chip shop is placed off the beaten track and doesn't look very impressive. However, you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, and only insiders know that the simple menu consists exclusively of tasty and fresh fish (from the Baltic Sea and Kamieński Bay), the fish soup is unique and the dishes are affordable. Zubowicz KAM13 is not only a fish and chip shop; it is above all else a place where you can buy fresh and smoked fish. My favourite is the smoked halibut but I recommend pickled salmon to connoisseurs. You can buy it in pieces or sliced very thinly. The undoubted advantage of this place is the fact that it is open all year.

I recommend it!
